This week we launched Black History Month with an assembly, to all year groups, delivered by 6th form students. The theme this year is "Honouring Our Communities". The assembly spoke about the importance of community and celebrating the unsung heroes within our local community. We looked back at the story of Black History Month and discussed the importance of celebrating the achievements of members of the Black community, this month, and throughout the year. We are very proud to promote National Cadets Week, as we know a large number of our young people are involved in one of the three uniformed cadet forces. Locally, you can find more about cadets by visiting their websites, or going along to see them: Sea Cadets and Royal Marine Cadets, Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School, Mondays and Wednesdays from 7.30pm  Army Cadets, 100 Queensway, Hemel Hempstead, Monday and Wednesday, from 7pm RAF Air Cadets, 100 Queensway, Hemel Hempstead, Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm Joining the Sea Cadets, Army Cadets or RAF Air Cadets gives young people opportunities and experiences that are difficult to find anywhere else. Cadets develop confidence, leadership, teamwork, communication and self-discipline by taking part in practical challenges and gradually taking responsibility for others. Independent research by the University of Northampton found that cadet participation can improve young people’s confidence, resilience, motivation and belief in their own abilities. It also found evidence of improved attitudes, behaviour and attendance at school. Cadets also get to do some amazing things. Depending on the organisation, this might include sailing, flying and gliding, adventurous training, first aid, expeditions, sport, fieldcraft, engineering or cyber activities. Along the way, cadets can gain recognised qualifications such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, BTEC Public Services, first-aid awards and sporting or leadership qualifications, giving them useful evidence of skills for college, university or employment. Most importantly, cadets provide the chance to make new friends, belong to a team, challenge yourself and discover what you are capable of. You do not have to want a career in the Armed Forces: cadet organisations are youth organisations, not part of the Armed Forces.

Live Parent Webinar: How to Help Your Child Improve Their Note Taking Tuesday 13th October 6:00-7:00pm (BST) Good notes are the foundation of effective revision for any student, but sometimes, a team effort is needed to get there. Our upcoming webinar familiarises parents with note taking techniques used by top performing students, so they can support their child with them at home. After our last note taking webinar, parents told us how it helped to make them, and their child, feel more confident in revision: ‘Thanks so much for last night’s webinar. I attended with my son Max, who is in year 11, and it gave us lots of really useful information to help us get organised for his revision. I feel more confident now as a parent to help.’

Apologies for the late notice; we were informed by Tilbury Douglas today that they will be putting temporary traffic lights on Heath Lane, for two weeks. We would advise parents and carers to allow extra time for their journey to and from school.

Our students have been asked to recommend more book titles for the Young Adult Team from Hertfordshire Public Libraries to buy for all their branches. We began this partnership last year and our student readers are having a positive impact in what the community reads and its existing ties with the local branch of Hemel Hempstead Public Library. #TheHHEx #EsseQuamVideri #Belonging

Welcome to your sixty-second update! Last year we proposed changes to our admissions and we are very grateful to our community who responded to the consultation. That process is now complete and our updated admissions policy for September 2027, in line the School Adjudicator's ruling, is on our website. We would like to offer Mandarin lessons - the Chinese language spoken by 1 in 8 of the world's population. Students can try a taster lesson on October the 8th, in M9. There are R4s for Matilda, Aaima and Anusha for running European Language Day assemblies, and Year 11 visited the Dacorum careers fayre. We announce all of the winners in the M.F.L. Bake Off. Under 13 girls football played Queens, Year 7 boys football played Longdean, and progressed to the next round of the County Cup, by beating Simon Balle. Thanks to the University of Hertfordshire for talking to Year 12 about career pathways, and to our Sixth Form student leaders for running the Year 7 Freshers Fayre.
