Hemel at War

hyldaandflight2In 2008 the History Department at Hemel Hempstead School, in collaboration with Professor Richard Grayson of Goldsmiths, University of London embarked on a major archive-based project. The school is very appreciative of the expertise and professional guidance offered by Goldsmiths and, especially, Professor Grayson who is a former student of the school.HHSMemorialExtract

The intention of this initiative was to create an archive of first-hand experiences of former pupils of the school who had been involved in conflicts of all kinds from the 20th century to the present day. The archive includes both military and civilian experiences of war, involving the wider community of Hemel Hempstead and surrounding areas.

henry baldersonThroughout the project, students of all ages have played a major part in interviewing and recording the recollections of a diverse range of residents of the area. This major oral history resource is a valuable historical archive which offers fascinating insights into the impact of war upon the local area and its citizens.J Stanbridge Photo5

We hope you will find this collection as inspirational as our students found the individuals with whom they worked.
