Duke of Edinburgh Award

Welcome to The Hemel Hempstead School Duke of Edinburgh Award section of the website. Here we hope to outline what is involved at each level, not just to serve as a reminder to existing participants but also to inform younger students as to what could be a rewarding experience in years to come.

There are three levels:

Bronze, which you start in year ten,  Bronze Award Requirements

Silver, which you start in year eleven, Silver Award Requirements

Gold, which you start in year twelve. Gold Award Requirements

Each level has four sections; Service, Skill, Physical Recreation and the Expedition. The expeditions are organised by the school but you are responsible for the other three sections.

Expedition training varies between levels. At Bronze level, you train one lunchtime per week from December to June. Silver and Gold normally involve one planning day (usually a Sunday) in the term before each expedition and two training days on location immediately before the expedition.

Equipment can be provided by the school but as you progress through the levels you may wish to obtain your own gear.

Many staff and former students have been involved in the Award over the years at Hemel Hempstead School and we would like to acknowledge their contributions here. Without their help the current team would not be able to run the expeditions! Thank you!

Forthcoming expeditions:

With the easing of Covid-19 restrictions we are looking to organise Bronze expeditions for the current year 10 (and possibly some year 11’s) on 9th/10th and 16th/17th July. There will also be a training day on a date to be confirmed, but before the 9th July.
We also aim to run a Silver practice expedition for those current year tens who wish to continue onto Silver in the Peak District in October (21st/25th). There will also be a Silver Qualifying expedition for the current year twelve students at a date to be confirmed.
There will also be a Gold Practice expedition for those students going into Year 13 next Easter (31st March-5th April) in the Brecon Beacons, and next summer there will be Gold and Silver Qualifying expeditions in the last week of the summer term – dates & venue to be confirmed.
